I was reading about the submarine cables that were damaged near Japan after the earthquake. I started reading about them and find them fascinating. I thought coax was a bitch to work with... this stuff is 3" thick and weighs 7 lbs/ft -- and of course, is extremely expensive.

Here's an updated map if anyone is interested:

Apparently less than 1% of all internet traffic is via satellite (and that's probably all from Antarctica.) It's all done by these submarine cables. Pretty cool.

Where does the lines from the northern part of Norway wind up going? They just head north and there is no corrisponding other end.

There is also a higher res image here http://www.telegeography.com/product-info/map_cable/downloads/2011_0208_CableMap_TeleGeography.jpg.zip

Cool map tho!

Here is a great website if submarine cables are of interest to you. I happened upon it when researching the extreme BS a distant relative was feeding the other day "there is NO Fiber Optic cable service to Hawaii!!!"

Really now

Yep cool stuff. Here's a neat (recent) documentary from CBS:

Nice typo at the 3:40 mark. Haha... I guess CBS doesn't hire anyone that can spell.
