Was on the way home on east I-90 just past eastgate and traffic comes to a grinding slow crawl and what for? Ohhh a WSDOT plow, SANDING!! the emergency lane as he drives about 40 MPH in the fastlane. Keep in mind its about 39-40 degrees and NOT snowing. Ummm what good does it do to sand the road so the snow will cover it up?? F-TARDS!!! No wonder the roads are a disaster around here when it snows. Sanding dry pavement ahead of a snowstorm is the epitomy of Puget Sound snow preparedness. Gotta love it.. |

Also provides a buffer between the snow that has a potential to freeze and the ground... |

Absolutely retarded...I saw the same thing in Billings, MT a few years ago. I know they also do this in Colorado, and even Wyoming. I saw it up in Anchorage about 5 years ago and couldn't believe it, but no, there was ADOT, sanding a dry freaking road ahead of forecast snow! ![]() ![]() Imagine the stupidity that the WSDOT leaders are going to feel when they realize they're just trying to imitate places with real snowstorms! They old way of doing things, waiting until AFTER it snows and fouls up all the area roads, and THEN dropping sand and de-icer has always worked out well, why the heck are they changing a sure thing? I'll never understand it. |

Here's a link from Massachusetts- http://mashpeema.virtualtownhall.net/Pa ... nowremoval Quote: Procedurally, as snowfall begins to cover roads, sand trucks will be dispatched to pre-sand paved surfaces in order to reduce packing of snow and ice. I have to wonder, again, why the heck the WSDOT doesn't just wait until the roads are packed with cars that can't move in the snow and ice, or spun out into the ditches, and THEN drop sand and plow the snow??? It's a proven technique for them! These wacky new experiments are costing YOU and I real MONEY! I sat on I-5 for 8 hours during "Snowmageddon" a few years ago- didn't hurt me! |

Thats what fires me up is the sitting for hours because some jackwagon doesn't realize that his "stuck" SUV has all or 4 wheel drive. I've actually witnessed this happen. On that same note, I heard Bothell PD tonight say they had a report from someone that a snowplow had slid off the road because he couldn't get traction.. A SNOWPLOW! Dum de dum dum duuuuuuummmmmm... Thats pretty sad when the ones who are actually trying to clear the roads are sliding off. amazing.. |

Sometimes the sand is mixed up with salt (keeps the pile unfrozen). Perhaps the road crews throw it down as a preemptive deicer. There must be some reason to throwing sand on an otherwise dry road. |

If I'm seeing the skids correctly, looks like he 180'd in there. I seen this in Spokane County a few years back. |

Regarding the last pic. It's about time they did something like that. That makes so much sense.. |
