1/30/2010 11:47:00 AM Army, Air Force begin Joint Base Lewis-McChord
The U.S. military is preparing for a formal announcement Feb. 1 that officially creates Joint Base Lewis-McChord from what is now the Army's Fort Lewis and nearby McChord Air Force Base. A Feb. 1 ceremony is to inform the soldiers, airmen and civilian workforce of the consolidation, and to unfurl the new Joint Base Headquarters colors. Full operational status as a joint base is expected later this year.
The military mission of the largest bases in Washington State is not being changed, according to officials.
The consolidation process began more than three years ago. Maximum efficiencies of having a joint operation aren't expected to be reached for five years, according to one official.
