If you spring for Win 7 Pro there is the virtual machines for running your older stuff They actually run really well in Win7... I run about 5 different OS's on virtual machines... XP Home, XP Media, XP Pro and Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Enterprise... I run a computer repair business on the side, and use them mostly to replicate problems that clients are reporting to me, but they are also great for running anything that you have that may not run on Win7. Just an idea for those with older stuff...

Okay, I need the executive summary here- what is a virtual machine? Do I have to get those silly headsets?

It's like another PC running inside a program on your computer.

Guess I could have included the link... Although the Microsoft explanation is way overly simplified as its not really a mode, but an actual virtual terminal withing Win7, as it uses your hardware resources like RAM and CPU, which can make Win7 really unstable if you take too much RAM... Then again I guess you have to over simplify for people that may not totally understand the dynamic of a virtual machine...

A virtual machine is a OS running within you OS, that pulls hardware resources to run a computer within a computer really...

Ummm....OK. I think I get it, but can't figure how that would ever be useful.

Then again, I'm usually surprised and delighted when my computer turns on.

Its really used for people that have programs they have to use with XP, and will not run in Win7... So they created the solution of, lets throw XP in with Win7 Pro as well... The overall problem is that things are not compatible with Win7, but XP is an industry standard worldwide, so while business bring their proprietary programs up to Win7 compatibility, they can still run their stuff in XP mode because Win7 would eventually go the way of the Dodo if business refused to adopt it...

virtual machines are handy for those who went to Apple and use a VM to run microsoft.

here are a couple of options
http://www.vmware.com/

I have this for my mac when i made the change:
http://www.parallels.com

Think of it as creating a virtual tub inside your current OS.
you can allocate what you want for HD space, RAM, Video ram
for your virtual machine. I've also heard it's a great way to test stuff that might be buggy or have the computer HIV...
