I would suggest that you to go to Shooters Supply in Yakima, but they have been closed for a few years now. If you get to Tacoma often then you might want to stop at The Bulls Eye Indoor Range or some other indoor range near by. Indoor ranges that rent guns are good spots to visit and try a wide variety of guns in different sized models and calibers. At the bulls eye you can rent buy the caliber or the entire case, which might be better to find a model that isn’t in all calibers. It might be a small expense but well worth it in the long run.

Find a gun that will fit your hand. If the gun doesn't feel right, being too big or too small and you’re going to have some problems.

As for the rumors of jamming issues I think the posts here have said a lot of good info. But don't forget to clean your gun. To quote the old bumper stickers from Oil Can Henrys: “If you Love it, lube it."And “A clean gun is happy gun.”

I personally would not throw out the idea of 9mm. You can still find lots of good ammunition at a reasonable price out there, well there used to be. And it is cheaper per round typically to go shoot for practice. With all the different bullet designs you have many options. Accuracy is just as important as caliber. If there were ever a time that you must pull a weapon (I seriously hope one would never have to, but in todays' world...) A well placed 9mmshot is going to have the same reaction as say a .40 or larger, within reason. Another benefit is a 9mm might have an extra round or two in the magazine which could be useful.

Also don't forget the "C" of the CWP. With a 9mm you might find a smaller frame. If you are a smaller person most guns are going to be tougher to hide a hand cannon strapped to your waist or ankle. I have a Glock 19 and Sig Sauer P226. The Glock is light, easier to conceal than my Sig. But I feel the Sig fits my hand better. Point is find something that fits, you like and you practice with on a regular basis. I set both guns up with the same night sights which is great for going between the two. A Sig Sauer P229 is a nice compact carry gun. There are decent revolvers out there. A nice thing with them is they don’t have as many of malfunction issues like a semi auto might have.

Do your research and find something that fits your hand and your ability to hide on your frame.

The above is some very good advice I forgot all about the renting thing, the poster hit the nail on the head spend a little find something that fits you and your build and go from there, and like he said I would not count out a 9mm, my backup is a PPKS its a chopped down 9mm with a HP round she hits hard.

2nd vote for G27 if you're going to conceal.

You can also go G30 or G36, which are double and single stack subcompact .45.

I started with a Taurus PT92 way back in the day, which is a clone of the Beretta 92FS (with a frame mounted safety instead of the slide mounted safety, even manufactured in Brazil in Beretta's old plant)..

I upgraded to a G17 (full size 9mm) for the weight savings.. It's a big difference....

I then upgraded to the G21SF (full size .45, slim frame) after reading multiple instances of officers discharging MULTIPLE (20+) 9mm rounds and having difficulty taking subjects down...

Quite literally, you are essentially asking yourself how much your life is worth, as your firearm may be the deciding factor in which you live or die.

I'm also a fan of going to a gun shop and spending 30$ or so to rent ALL the guns they have, in different calibers, different brands, style, etc to see what fits YOU best. There's a reason why there are so many different designs.

No matter what you hear though, the 1911 guys are drinking their own koolaid ...

Find what fits you best, what you're comfortable carrying, and that you can shoot 'naturally'..... Train with it, draw it from cover, do whatever YOU need to do to feel comfortable with it....

Proper belts and proper holsters are important as well.

I have different holsters for different occasions.

Leather 3 slot pancake, for 'dress' occasions when I OC. A Serpa CQC retention holster for OC, and an uncle mikes nylon IWB for concealing, which I can do pretty well even with a full size G21 since I'm a bigger guy... My favorite gun belt so far has actually been a Cabelas 'duty belt' which is 1 1/2" and runs 25$ when it's on sale.. It's double stitched leather with a center reinforcement... so it holds everything steady/still without flexing in the wrong spots.

Do what works for you.

Someone on another board has a great signature:
Quote:
The 9mm/.40S&W/.45ACP debate will go on forever, but no one ever doubts the effectiveness of a 12 gauge.

Get what's good for you. I've SEEN a guy run away with 3 .223 rounds in him, and heard about another guy take multiple .45ACP hits and stay in the fight....Likewise, a good friend's patrol partner was killed (shot through the vest) by a dirtbag with a .22LR, but by the same token, I once had a .22LR round bounce off my heavy Carhartt coat.

Shot placement, shot placement, shot placement....And sometimes a little luck.

Or, use one of these-----> :chaingun:

PS- get some professional training, and for God's sake, carry in conditon one. There aren't time outs like in the video in my signature line.

In fact, call me later today. There's some other stuff we need to discuss.

Well, here it is the 21st of June and I still haven't received that white envelope from the DOL. Who do I call to figure out where the hell it is? I went in on the 28th of May and am still waiting.

On another note, I went in yesterday and picked up a Springfield XD-40 compact. Of course, since I'm waiting for the freaking state, they wouldn't let me take it home, but my name is all over it. The guy did also mention that so far this year, the state has received more applications then they did in all of last year. That I suppose could be contributing to the delay.

Local PD sent mine in something like a week, last nov.
Was not the first ever issued, but not a "renew" either, as my previous had expired many years ago.
