If you want to have an open dialog about the 2nd amendment rights and to help educate people on gun rights, you don’t do it by strapping an assault rifle on your back walking around a major city causing panic (especially a city recovering from a shooting spree) hoping that people will stop and talk to you. They had no signage, t-shirts or anything telling the public what their intent was.

I feel they could have carried their message a lot better if they just had an open carry of a handgun, handing out flyers at a table explaining the benefits of gun laws. It wouldn’t be such a shock to a demographic that isn’t use to seeing guns and wouldn’t possibility be used as examples to pass new gun laws because a few sour grapes ruined it for the rest of us.

Considering they were not breaking any laws, it seems the dumbasses were the people causing a panic by calling the police without a legitimate reason. Its not the fault of the rifle owners that other people are stupid.

While walking around with rifles probably serves no useful purpose, it certainly exposed the ignorance of the masses.

It's not uncommon to see folks -men & women- open carry up here.
Not an eyebrow gets raised.

These guys have a bunch of youtube videos of them testing law enforcement. You can open carry in Oregon, but however, WHY do you need to open carry a rifle (I can't rememeber what make...I know in some of their videos they have an AR-15) plus a handgun in the holster in the Sellwood area...

I think Outlaw brings out a good point.

Where he is, open carry is basically natural, but "in the city" I personally believe it is in poor taste.

Personally, I am an avid Gun Owner, but my 11 bro's and Sis' (yeah it's a brood) are all Anti-Gun.

The fact is a major portion of our population are frightened by the sight of guns. Sure we can get on our high horse and call them "ignorant" or "dumbasses", but their right to not be near guns is as important as my right to own and carry (undisclosed #) of guns.

I (almost) always carry concealed. I did open carry around the yard when the punk-neighbor still lived next door, simply because he is a stupid f@ck, and would likely forget if it wasn't in his face at all times, but in general I never show.

I consider it (concealed carry) an act of respect to others + a distinct advantage if or when I do actually need it. (Plus, it makes it easier to ignore "Gun Free Zone" signs at the mall)

And the one time I DID need it, that advantage certainly worked in my favor. I can still smell the shit in his pants...

The article is not quite accurate. There are several cities in Oregon which preempt any type of carry by non-concealed carry license holders. (Oregon only pre-empts on a Statewide basis those who are licensed in the State)

From opencarry.org:

"Summary
Oregon is a traditional open carry state. However, their preemption statute only covers concealed handgun license holders from city or county passed bans against loaded firearms in public places. To our knowledge, only the cities of Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Oregon City, Salem, and Independence have passed loaded firearms bans encompassing all public places, and other cities have passed bans specific to Parks. Also, all “public buildings” are also off limits throughout the entire state unless you have a concealed handgun license."

When I lived in Oregon in the 1990's, they still had a residency requirement to obtain a concealed carry license. I was told last fall by the operator of a booth at Puyallup (the dude who pimps training classes for 37 states) that Oregon now issues licenses to non-residents, however they are one of a handful of states who require you to appear IN the state for fingerprinting. He appeared to have enough facts that I tend to believe him, I just haven't plopped down the $250 for his course so I can go test that theory.

I should add the fact that 'up here' is managed as Griz habitat, I had blackies in the front yard countless times, seen cougars (the four legged type), wolf tracks, and the moose show no fear.
The cougars are the most concerning because of their sneakiness.
Bears and moose crash through the trees, plus bears smell when the wind direction is favorable.
Horses are very alert and will pick up on things before I can.

Especially things of great danger, like plastic bags blowing around in the wind. At least that was my experience this evening.

And of course, there are no bears freely roaming in Sellwood here in Portland. I can understanding open carrying a handgun around but a rifle in the city? Maybe if your Jed Clampet
