Sedro-Woolley officer fatally shoots man
1/20/10 The Associated Press:
SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - The police chief of Sedro-Woolley says one of his officers has fatally shot an armed Mount Vernon man after a confrontation on State Highway 20. No one else was injured.
Chief Doug Wood says the 32-year-old officer had pulled over a red Chevy Blazer on Tuesday afternoon for erratic driving as it was headed north into Sedro-Woolley. But Wood says the driver pointed a handgun at the officer and drove off. The officer was following the Blazer when the driver pulled over again, on Highway 20. The chief says the driver got out of his vehicle and walked toward the officer, pulling out a handgun again. Wood says the officer then fired at least twice, killing the man.
Neither the dead man nor the officer was immediately identified late Tuesday. The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
The Skagit County sheriff's office is investigating the shooting.
Highway 20 was temporarily closed in the area Tuesday evening.
