Post subject:  RAILROAD MONTITORING??????

Anyone monitor railroad freqs? and if so what are the "hot" freqs to listen in on? I have several programed that i got from a railscanning website and this site have them plugged in all day and no comms. I'm in Woodinville and live right near the tracks in town, seems somewhat active. Thank you.

I'm 90% on this (from memory);
161.100 for the mainline (+ detectors) which paralells SR2.
Great signal around Skykomish and Monroe when I lived up that way.
Punch it in and check it out. (?).
I used to sit up in the Money Creek campground with the Skykomish river on one side and the Mainline on the other and monitor the train comms (+ forest and what ever else).

New Extended AAR Band Plan - Including Added Frequencies

The FCC has been reorganizing many of the band plans for business radio, and the railroads are no exception. With the advent of new equipment, it's possible to have frequencies that are spaced closer together then before. In the rail band, they've added frequencies in between the old standard AAR channels. These frequencies will probably be utilized more in the future as railroads adapt their radio systems. I assume the big roads will be the first to make use of these. As you can see by looking at the list of individual railroads near the bottom of the page, some of the big roads have already reserved these frequencies and hold licenses for them.


Frequencies Outside the AAR Channel Group


Frequencies that railroads might utilize outside the typical AAR band plan. Here's a list of the ones I'm aware of...

EOTD (End of Train Devices) - 457.9375 These are the boxes that are attached to the coupler of the last car in the train. They transmit data to the head end.
EOTD (End of Train Devices) - 452.9375 This frequency is mostly used on trains in Canada, but I've also heard of it being used on the head end in America, to "talk" to the EOTD.
VHF Marine Channel 16 - 156.800 This can sometimes be the calling frequency for lift bridges.
Advanced Train Control Systems (ATCS) - This is the new system that railroads are starting use on upper 800 and 900 MHz frequencies. The frequencies are being registered under the Association of American Railroads, or the Transportation Technology Center, not the individual railroads that use them. These radio systems basically collect information about train movement and other things along the line. This information is sent to computers and is then used to create the realtime displays dispatchers have on their screens, showing train movement and so on. The data isn't always sent through the air, but when it is, it's done in a duplex method using two different frequencies. Small high band yagi antennas at various points along the right-of-way are usually used for these transmissions. The list below is my understanding of what frequencies are being used for this system now. There may be others, and I'm sure this will change greatly in the future.

Various Frequencies - The below frequencies are listed as being set aside for rail use in the national FCC database. It's unknown how many of them are being used now, and for what purpose. Some of the 900 MHz frequencies are being used for the above mentioned ATCS.

In this month's Service Search column we will start taking an in-depth look at the new Industrial/Business Pool. We will start with the first of four categories into which Industrial/Business Pool has been condensed: the LR or Railroad allocations. These frequencies are currently being licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. :D :D That sure is great info --- but keep in mind -- the railroads are cutting staff and automating everything that they can't get rid of. 99% of railroad communications are within the 160.215 to 161.565 Mhz railroad band. A new proposed FCC rule -- will allow use of ANY railroad channel -- within a 50 to 60 mile radius of any railroad line, track or "right of way". It will save the railroads stacks of cash -- because they will only need to file one master license for the entire system. Each time the railroad files for a base station license -- it costs about $ 750. --- " Fed-Ex " -- now owns several "shortline" railroads. They do use the common railroad channels -- but have been a "little lacks" in filing for a valid FCC license. Most use one or more - "mainline" railroad channels as well as one or more "private channels". And keep in mind the NEW FCC rules. ANY OPEN" or Un-used radio channel -- can be used by both PW - Public Safety Radio and IG - Business Radio users. Asotin County PWD uses a common Railroad channel.

I do a lot of listening on the internet on live streams. http://www.psrrr.net/Live_Stream.html and http://www.railroadradio.net/. From Newcastle you could probably hear trains working in the Kent Valley. Maybe some UP dispatch and yard on 160.515. And some BNSF main channel dispatch on 161.160 or 161.415. Its all about going to the yard and watching and figuring out which channel they are using.
