Everything ok here in L.A., closest fire started in Sylmar which is right next to where the last fire was. Looks like a lot more is burning down in Mike's area ! The local TV stations have live 24/7 coverage in HD so there has been quite a bit to see. In some cases entire neighborhoods have been barbecued to the ground. Of course they whipped out the DC-10 firebomber for this one. Its not every day you see a full sized plane doing low-level hotdog flying.

Good to hear from you, and I'm glad to hear you are OK.
Hope same is said of Mike.

I suppose this isn't a good time to go scuba diving down there...

I think that both Rich and I -- are to busy listening and watching the Fire Storm. The first night -- LA City Fire was on the line. Just about all 18 frequencys in use plus a few air to ground. The Sylmar area was hit hard and fast. LA City, USFS and LA County all working. Then the next day it was the Corona area on the Riverside / Orange county line that was hit and then on into the Green River area and Carbon Canyon area of Orange County. Lack of water and crews didn't help. Radio traffic was very active. 3 full days of around the clock communications. It was 51 degrees in Seattle and in the low 90's in and around the LA - Orange county area. The smoke sometimes blocked out the sun. Add the 3 or 4 good football games on TV, both yesrterday and today -- and it was a great weekend in a place -- some where in between heaven and hell. Sort of Like living in the Twilight Zone.

Does it sound like they'll be needing some help? Like from a fire dept in Yakima, WA?

What's everyone using down there? (VHF, 800 trunking etc...) Hows it all interoperability-ating?

Joey, No need to put your boots on yet. The CHP is on low band. The CHP has had some problems closing down certain freeways and blocking all of the on ramps. A few reports of cars driving through very heavy smoke and fire at times. LA County of UHF T Band (470 - 485 Mhz) and High Band VHF. LA City Fire on 800 mhz -- non trunked. Orange County Fire on 800 Mhz trunked. USFS on high band. Lots of air to ground -- VHF. The "Montecito / Santa Barbara City" fire is 70% contained. Most of the others are about 30% contained. If the heat and winds drop -- everything will be under control by the end of the week. Each Fire agency attacked the fires as they moved into their "Protection Area" -- so most inter-ops was done at a common command post for each fire.
