Looking for the newest top of the line scanner. P25 - phase 2, etc. What is out there?

Two ways to go. Whistler TRX-1 or 2 or Uniden 436 or 536. I went with Uniden, but will probably own the TRX-1 sometime...

TRX 1 or 2... Portable vs Mobile... the prices just came down on the mobile.

DMR, NXDN, P25 P1/P2...

You realized you could've waited and had the privilege of paying for upgrades from Uniden to do what the TRX series already does, right???

Yes, yes, I know, I know. I've just had really good luck with my trusty 396XT.

Not at all happy with the software. Software locks up. Sometimes recognizes the scanner. Sometimes will connect and actually pass the database into it.

Yes, I did the NXDN upgrade. Yes the scanner is now a piece of shit.

FYI you cannot use it thru a USB hub or while a RTL-SDR is active...

I think I kinda got it figured out. It's best to turn it off then plug it into the USB. If it's on and you plug it in, it just locks up the software and screws things up. It's just a pain in the ass. I did also find out that with it plugged in, the computer wouldn't recognize a genuine Kenwood USB programming cable. I had to unplug the scanner and restart the computer before it would recognize the Kenwood cable.

I also hafta admit I'm flat amazed at what it can hear. I can hear NOAA 162.55 on Eagle in Yakima sitting on my couch in Moses with the stock antenna on. I can also hear traffic on the Mission Ridge TrboWest site which is 50 some miles away, in my house also sitting on the couch with the stock antenna on.

So far it's working pretty well, systems wise. WSP, MACC P25 Trunk and TrboWest are coming in nicely. I'm not hearing anything on other radios that this thing isn't picking up. I first had a problem with the MACC system -- It would stop on a TG but I wouldn't hear anything. I adjusted some audio settings and I hear things now...weird.

I'll take it home and listen to NXDN stuff this weekend and have a better idea how it works.

It has to be off but plugged in to update/change codeplugs, etc....Unless you're updating the DSP.

I think.

So - the TRX 1 or TRX 2 have all the bells and Whistlers (pun) that anyone would need - right out of the box ? No need for extra downloads ?

I hear that both the TRX 1 and 2 are not that easy to field program - on the go. Is that the case ?

Nah not true. Once you learn how it works once you'll get it. In some ways easier than the Uniden scanners.

I had some odd issues with the TRX-2 so I returned mine -- but also because Uniden released the 996P2 DMR upgrade -- I didn't need the TRX-2 any longer.

I concur. Pretty easy to program in by hand conventional and system stuff. I had to add a couple MACC TGID's to the "system" in the scanner in just a few minutes which included banging out the aliases.

Edit: Also did a pretty good job decoding NXDN conventional channels this weekend. My NX-5200 is a bit more sensitive and thus can decode weaker signals better than the TRX-1.
