I personally believe this would be a mistake for a department that is already under scrutiny by the community for lack of transparency. Cheney PD and Spokane County say they would not go that route.

I have no knowledge that this is fact but, it seems logical to me that SPD may be reacting to Facebook pages like 'Spokane News'- who post every single incident that occurs in real time, by listening to a scanner.

I did not think that posting based soley on radio traffic was legal. But, rather than try to 'attack citizen journalists' and all the potential foolishness that might stir-up here, I can see why they would consider fulltime encryption.

Any jag-off with a camera phone and a Youtube account fancies themselves a "journalist" these days, even when they have to intentionally inflame/provoke a situation to get something on "film".

I hope they go full encryption. The scanning community has done irreparable harm to itself and it's hobie over these last 5 years or so, and continues to deny this fact and couch it's guilt in strawman arguments about "secret police", etc.
