Sadly I must report that Jay Lightner KC7BUR (aka "The Outlaw") passed away on November 16th 2014. Jay had been an active member on here for at least 15 years and was a friend to many of us. He was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and was undergoing treatment. Jay was a US Army veteran (3rd Infantry Division). After his military service he worked for the Washington State Dept of Corrections at Monroe and the Umatilla Army Chemical Depot. Jay also spent about a year working as the resident ranger at the Snyder Guard Station in the Bridger-Teton National Forest (Idaho). Most recently he was living north of Spokane near Deer Park. Jay had a number of interests including on/off road motorcycling, hunting, fishing, camping, horses, and ham radio/scanners. He took his motorcycle and camping gear all over the trails of NE Washington (Ferry/Stevens/Pend Oreille counties) and Northern Idaho sometimes for weeks at a time.

I only conversed with Jay either here or via text, but I got the sense from his posts that he was an honorable gentleman with a witty sense of humor. My condolences to his family and to all of you who had the privilege to have met him and called him a friend. RIP Jay

From his diagnosis at the end of September til 11/16/14.

Goddamnit.

We bickered like cats and dogs (and about cats and dogs), but I liked the guy. Broke bread and drank a lot of brews together, traded insults and information, told tales and tall tales back and forth, shared shooting tips and planned (but never made) some great hunting expeditions. And God, how we made fun of people!

We were at the Perkins restaurant in Spokane once (and yes, Tim, I took that picture there) and when were done stuffing ourselves, the waitress asked "Will that be one check, or two?". Jay turned to her and said "Two! This is a dutch date!"...

We caused a ruckus at the Post Falls Cabela's store and nearly got arrested, then he talked me out of an impulse rifle purchase...

When I was going through (redacted) training at Fairchild AFB, Jay offered to come down from his mountain hideaway and meet me for chow, knowing fully well what type of crap I was enduring. I wish we'd made the meet...

I made fun of his Remington 7600 and he made fun of my Savage 10T; I mocked his Ruger and he howled at my Glock...

And oh yeah, his ex-wife didn't like me.

Lightner, you jackass, you'll be missed.
