"Link Layer Encryption is in progress. This is the first big new technology upgrade for
improved Security for all air interfaces of P25. It protects control channel control
messages, and hides group and individual IDs."

Yeah, its been in the works for years; however despite it makes monitoring useless, it IS the smarter approach to securing the system.

Sorry to raise a question for which the answer may be obvious but does this actually mean that my trunk tracker scanners will become worthless hardware soon?

Also as a poor potential alternative, will it still be possible to listen to the individual (non-control channel) frequencies or will they be encrypted? Of course it will mean not knowing what agency or unit is transmitting without the ID's I suppose even if the regular comm channels remain open.

Thanks,
Gordon NW7D

Encryption is coming. There isn't much you can do. The days of clear traffic are numbered. You've got a few years left until the technology is deployed by system owners. But those system owners may not implement those features. It all depends on their appetite for risk.

Insert streaming audio for profit arguement here.

I thought the point of allowing citizens to monitor *some* of the police comms was to help transparency and a reminder that the public is listening and to keep things professional?
Are you saying the PD's themselves are thinking of using streaming comms as a revenue source?

I disagree with Trunk Tracking going dead in this area... As Sean says "Encryption in coming", but it isn't here yet (Sean maybe talking about just KC). If it's not here yet, then I don't think it will be here at all. WSP is the newest system out there that hasn't gone to encryption. South Sound 911 new system isn't fully encrypted and left the dispatch TGs in the clear. SERS tweeted out that they have no plans to go to 100% Encryption even though they have around 5 TGs that are encrypted. SERS recently decided not to enable "shuffled bandplan" on their system. 256-bit AES encryption is expensive. There is ADP encryption which is allot more cheaper but then agencies risk losing federal grants (http://urgentcomm.com/networks-amp-syst ... y-decision). Interoperability would be an issue. I think DanTanna might be on the right track as far as transparency but I feel it's more about politics and to avoid lawsuits. When KC went to a TRS, there were no trunking scanners on the market and the media sued KC so they could listen. KC gave in but sold the media Motorola’s at three times the cost. Just my two cents...

I listened conventionally then and knew a lot more about the water dept. and dog catcher than I do now:)

When SFD first went TRS I did not own a Trunk Traking Scanner but was able to listen to them with my Bearcat 800XLT. Also you could purchase a Non-Transmitting 800Mhz Radio, big bucks$$$$$ that the SFD Radio shop would hook you up with. Might be because of that Media Lawsuit.
