New portable coming out from Anytone. Highlights of the features of the high end model: Tri-Band: VHF/220/UHF Dual band, receive two signals at the same time Cross band repeat MSK encode & decode FHSS – Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum Can double as a 2-Tone Pager (any one of 16 different 2-Tone tones can be assigned to any saved channel) Memory banks (10 banks, up to 32 channels per bank) Can operate both VFO and Memory mode at the same time Independent squelch level for each channel Single or dual PTT buttons FCC Part 90 certified MSK & FHSS are described starting on page 65 of the manual. The FHSS isn't going to replace your scanner for RXing; it doesn't do trunking decoding and you don't get to choose how the channels hop. $189.95 for the tri band, $149.95 for dual band, and $99.95 if you don't need the FHSS/MSK. Also new is the AT-5888UV III, which is the same as the AT-5888UV mobile but adds 220 TX/RX. |

Re the Anytone 588UV (mobile) mentioned in this post. I was speaking with someone at Austin (Texas) Amateur Radio who sells this model. They advice that they have sold many of this radio with very few returned or negative reports. They said that the Wouxan (sp) that came out at about the same time was a whole different story with many problems. Any idea what the tri-band mobile will run? Wayne KF7FYL |

I know some people who have the Anytone mobile; they like it; only comment was the receiver has quirky signal rejection. |

When are radios from China going to include to P25? The Boafeng UHF only no display is now $16.00 Tinny sound, but does the job. |

I noticed that two of the new radios are tri-band with coverage in the 220mhz band. I believe this is the 1.25 meter area which I believe is available to Technician license holders. I have never had a radio which covers that band. My question is how much activity is in the 1.25 meter area. I sense from what I have read is that it isn't very busy as there are concerns that amateur radio may lose it due to lack of use. I would appreciate your comments. Wayne KF7FYL |

Gampawayne, my $.02, 220Mhz is quiet, but I don't think there are many folks on the band since there hasn't been a whole lot of radio's in the past that offer w/ much power. I've had the standard 144/440 dualband in my car for years, and when the vx-8 came out it was fun to use 220 now and then but it was quiet. The drawback of the handhelds that have been out for awhile but w/ minimal power. and with Cars there's not much room to add a radio stack if you want to have passengers so most have been compromising w/ just the popular standard 144Mhz/440Mhz. I do think the propagation of 220Mhz is pretty interesting and the way explained to me was kind of the best of both worlds. (More experienced Elmer's chip a nickel of their wisdom in or we should move to another thread.) There aren't many machines around, however the ones that are, do have pretty good coverage. |
