I am planning on adding a Verizon 4G wireless router to my boat. The router has two external antennas for diversity reception. I have found short can type antennas that will work. I was hoping to either mount those on masts as high as I can get them or to find a longer high gain antenna... Any suggestions? |

Just some thoughts... At that wavelength, as the boat rocks due to wave action or people moving around and causing it to rock, the antenna will move "back and forth" thru several arriving "wavefronts" causing the signal to drop in and out. Like going towards the source of the signal, then retreating from the source. At best sounding like multipath, at worst, just dropping in and out. So, likely the lower gain antennas and lower / closer to center of the boats axis would work better than way up a mast. Now if the boat is large enough, this won't matter as much if at all. But, that is what I found caused a lot of trouble on 460 and 860 mhz. on our police boats (24 to 36 ft) when we put high gain antennas up on the mast. We would drop in and out of the repeaters as the boats rocked, moving the antennas on the masts to go back and forth 5 or 6 ft. Going to 1/4 wave antennas solved it. Not sure what you will find at 4G. But it will be interesting to hear what you get. |

I should also add.. While I have considered a high end CradlePoint or similar LTE gateway, I think I am just going to try the Netgear MBR1515 that Verizon is offering (with a contract of course) for $29.99) I would then add it to my share everything plan and drop an Ipad off of the plan. The router costs $20.00 per month versus the $10 for the tablet. What I do want to make sure is that the Netgear NEVER roams unless I specifically allow it to. I am sure I will pick up some Canadian signal as I travel about. Unless someone has an idea about a inexpensive Cradlepoint/Cisco/Fourney type modem, I think this is the route to go. |

Gotta figure in coax loss too... Doesn't make sense to have +3db gain because of antenna placement then have -6db in cable losses. @ 1.7Ghz, you gotta use some good stuff to mitigate loss for any decent length of coax. |

Less than a 8' run of coax.. probably going to use lmr-195. I can't find that Shakespeare at any vendor's website. I will email shakespeare to find out if they are still in production. Digital Antennas are expensive, and I don't know if I want to invest too much until I know this will work. |
