This Saturday Uniden is having an online event releasing their latest scanner models.

No idea on the specs as yet -- we'll just have to wait until Saturday.

Most of the FCC data was hidden so no information was really gleamed from that other than the range which has always been 25-1300 Mhz. The size of the handheld model was about 50% larger than the 396XT model.

Both models have "HP" in their name so my guess is these are homo-patrol like models. Given the size increase, I wouldn't surprised if they have touch screens.

I'd be very surprised if they didn't support Phase 2 P25 or at least will support with a future update.

It would be nice if the casing is robust similar to commercial stuff.

That would add a few hundred dollars to the price. Don't bet on it. :)

Nah I wouldn't fret over your decision. The 996xt is one of the best scanners you can get right now.

There won't be any full-time Phase 2 P25 around here for another year or so... (Pierce County will be migrating to a massive Phase 2 P25 system in the next couple years.)

I'd be really surprised if the new scanners offer any new modes. It would be awesome to get TRBO but I won't hold my breath.

Heh, it just never seems to fail whenever I buy some piece of tech the next gen is announced. Though I realize I'm late to the party on this one.
As a computer guy I'm used to only have a 5 min window before bleeding edge becomes obsolete so just kind of chuckling at my timing.
How long have the 996 or GRE 800 been on the market now? Few years right?
Glad to see something new on the horizon actually.

996xt = July 2009
PSR-800 = Spring 2011

Both units look nice. I like the portable with the larger screen. Hope that means more useful trunking information.

I hope the new mobile unit has the same dimensions as the 996XT. My Jotto console wouldn't be very happy.

I had to wade through most of the 19 mins to tell me it's phase II capable and "I can drive from LA to NYC" and 'not program my radio' based on some pre-programmed knowledge.

While the "average users" bit was kind of cheesy, the feature's and usability of the new models sound pretty good.
Speaking for myself, the wi-fi/phone app is very interesting and something I'd use around the house and in the car.
The larger displays looked really nice. I was glad to see they didn't try to go to a touch screen interface.

I wonder with the sd card if that is the only memory for the unit or if it can operate without the card?
