So, the way I understand it, Phase II will not be backward compatible with anything.?.

Do you mean as far as the radio is concerned? A P2 radio is full compat with a P1 system. I just read that a couple of systems are using P1/P2 in a mixed mode environment.

So far the only limitation of P2 is the lack of conv operations - trunking only.

One might think the radio inventors would get P-25 to sound decent before moving on.

QUESTION:

As long as we're on the topic of P2, . . . is there a "fix" yet for the apparent latency delay w / voice encryption across a trunked network ?

I'm told that the SWAT guys can't accurately employ encryption, if trunked, when they need real time countdowns for breaching maneuvers.

I would assume that SIMPLEX would work best there ?

This doesn't address your question, but in my experience (not scanner user) encryption presents it's own set of issues.
I agree using simplex for local work.

The "fix" is to run analog simplex. Its amazing how technology has advanced leaps and bounds over the past 30 years yet voice over digital has gone straight downhill over the same period of time. This is what happens when engineers treat voice as data without factoring in the obvious things that hinder usability.

Phase 1 sounds just as poorly on the Bendix King & the Uniden.
Which suggests 'modulation type' issues rather then equipment issues.

The WSP system on Tacoma sounded really good on my Astro Spectra while they were there. Im still partial to analog and don't see enough benefits to the end user to get on board quite yet. In fact quite the opposite.

Audio quality when it works hasn't been one of my turnoffs.

Even though this is 2010, it shows that P25 has its benefits:

It's sounds 'clean' when it's 'synced up', I agree.
But more often than not it sounds like Charlie Browns teacher talking.

Old enough to remember going to Radio Shack for a new needle for the stereo and a new crystal for the scanner.

I remember going to ABC Communications in the 70's to get my Electra Bearcat Scanner. This is not the same little store on the West side of 15th AVE NE, it was a Supper size store located on the East side of 15th Ave Northeast located in Shoreline (North City) I had a high school buddy who worked there
