Do I have to plumb the audio from the speaker jack on the scanner into the phone physically or can I use the mediocre built-in microphone on the phone held up next to the radio when the MDC chirp transmits?

Just hold it up. Listened to City Light's UHF system today and it decoded the IDs just fine. :beer:
