Now that GRE has gone under have there been any announcements of any new scanners in the works? Guess we are stuck with Uniden if we want digital. Too bad some manufacture doesn't come out with a scanner that will track P25 phase 2. |

Somewhere, quite recently, I heard or read a rumor that Uniden was going to stop making scanners altogether. Anyone else seen that? |

I was talking with a scanner dealer on the east coast the otherday. This person seemed to think someone would step in, restart the assembly process and put the radios back on the market. Given today's economy, I have serious doubts that this will happen. Given the economy, P25 Phase 2, Band Shuffle (I think that is what it is called) and other enhancements I can't see where long term investors would be interested. Apparently GRE manufactured the only scanner that would monitor P25 Phase 2. I have seen it referred to in this forum the latest being a recent entry re Grays Harbor County. How much of Phase 2 is out there now? Is it a costly process to convert from Phase 1 to Phase 2 considering mobile radios, base stations, handhelds, etc. The spending has to stop sometime. I don't have anything definite, only what I hear and personal observations. |

AFAIK, the only phase 2 system up and running right now is King County Metro transit. In my opinion, the dearth of new scanners can be directly traced to the number of streaming apps for cellphones. Why spend a ton of money developing and marketing new scanners to an admittedly small, niche market, when most people would rather drop $2 on an app versus $500 on a new scanner? |

That is not Phase 2 P25. That system is X2-TDMA. Big difference. |

I think there were rumors that Radio Shack was looking to buy out GRE but I think this was a pipe dream. R/S isn't doing so well either right now. There is quite a bit of Phase 2 P25 around the country but I don't know if it's coming here. If any agency wants Motorola digital then that's what you'll get... unless they go TRBO. I don't know why KC Metro went into this proprietary X2-TDMA standard. |

Without the GRE radios that they once sold under their name their scanner sales will go way down the tubes. Like Wilrobnson said the cell phone apps are taking the place of scanners and are a lot cheaper than going out and buying the latest trunk tracking digital scanner. |

Yep this is why PSR-800 scanners are selling for $1600 currently. No I'm not joking... |

I agree with this also. However, they've gotta understand that those feeds are provided by someone with a real scanner. Not that I'm a big fan of the feeds anyways. |

I hve heard the same rumors about R/S wanting to purchase GRE. In fact i heard it as late as last week. I agree, I don't think it will happen. I have read two or three articles since the first of the year where some investors and Wall Street believe Radio Shack will be gone by the end of 2013. If note the end of this year, they are saying certainly by the end of 2014. Radio Shack isn't the Radio Shack I knew and frequented years ago. I seem to see a lot of their old HAM gear on Ebay. Does anyone have any idea who made their Amateur Radio equipment when they carried it? |

Atomic Taco wrote: Link? Highest I see on eBay is $630 That's because everyone started selling them... ;) Apparently several dealers couldn't find any to sell and the price shot up for a few days. The one or two on E-Bay at the time sold for a lot of cash. Check out ScannerMaster's new price: http://www.scannermaster.com/GRE_PSR_80 ... 501608.htm |
