Interesting. A consultant that attended the same class I was in contacted the local agency and was told they are putting in for a narrowband waiver for their licenses. Must be some old channels they intend to bring back to life.

Why is it that time and time again I read horror stories about OpenSky?

Probably because in some places, loosely-titled "communications directors" decide they want the latest and greatest, damn the cost or reputation or "interoperability", to leave a legacy they'll be remembered by.

So what if VHF works fine? This is newer and shinier! We'll be a beacon of digital hope in an analog wasteland! People will be talking about our agency for eons!

...Or something like that.

speaking of loud, anyone know why an install of a different (DTMF) circuit board upgrade in a Kenwood TK-280 would make the volume threshold go from normal low to almost mid range (lowest) to really high? I can use it in a railroad application for hearing but what should be 1 or 2 out of 10 starts about 3 and goes to 13. I suspect the board is bad but what exactly is wrong. The previous board sounds the same volume wise as my 481.

Oh god, OpenSky is megacrap!

For those unfamilar, this trunked radio format is designed by people who really should not be in 2 way radio period. The protocol is based upon CPCD (the old AMPS way of doing packet data over cellular) and actually route the voice data as VoIP packets. And thats where the problem lies! All of the large scale deployments of OpenSky I've heard of one and which one of them I have seen (New York State's when they tried using OpenSky for the state IWN) the radios show a full signal from the tower and says its affilated, but when you try to key up, it won't grant a channel because their server for system management doesn't see the radio.

But OpenSky is actually great at doing straight data. FedEx actually uses OpenSky just for its purpose and is actually what OpenSky was designed for originally; they had some voice capability on it, but not the same demands as public safety. A few cities that tried OpenSky for voice ended up keeping the system and just put MDTs and everything over on it because of the good data functions.

They're always SNACC or have Harris build them a new, trusted system, which is probably what they want.

Can't speak to Kenwood, but the ICOM's will do this in some cases.
2 different audio levels were present at the option jacks, depending upon levels.

So Encryption, Tone, etc... boards had 2 versions, one for "low" level and another for "high" level audio on the Accy port.

Perhaps this is happening here?

could be, the shitty thing is it is a slightly used board. The new board from East Coast wouldn't send audio from the mic element, even after a new mic element and tactical button. we swapped out mic elements, changed some resistors and other fun wasted time and still no audio. We even tested another board from a 481 to try to short out the soldier points behind the mic element and it didn't affect anything to take one for the team. So I had to use this board to substitute. Actually, unless I'm using an earphone adapter, I don't think the increased threshold will be any worse considering I will use it on the RR on speeder trips so loud is good. I'll look into the access port, thanks

The law enforcement units changed call signs today also. The old IDs were 20XX for KCSO and 30XX for Goldendale PD. New is samXX for KCSO and george for GPD. I haven't had a chance to hear what Bingen-White Salmon has. I think KCSO should have went back to zebraXX, for years KCSO units used Z-XX just saying "Z" and their number.

Hilarious. A P25 trunked 700 mhz system for Gilliam and Sherman counties.

Not too long ago, I had occasion to call the Gilliam County Sheriff's Office while doing a follow-up. Some guy answered and we had a quick conversation. Thinking I was talking to a front-desk civilian employee or somesuch, I asked if I could talk to a deputy about my case. The guy said "the deputy's not available, but I can run that check for ya."

Yes, the Sheriff answered the public phone number I had called.

Quick facts- Gilliam County has a population of 1800; 1700 for Sherman County.
