The BC147XLT is an older VHF/UHF scanner. I figured WSP, Marine VHF, some aviation stuff and maybe a few Ham repeater, specifically repeaters used for SAR.

Railroad stuff is pretty good here too. Also, plug in the FRS/GMRS frequencies.

Might I tactfully suggest leaving out the FRS/GMRS stuff? With the widespread availability of these type of radios, he's bound to hear some...salty language.
I know I sure have.

I hear more "salty" language on UHF commercial than I do anywhere else especially after normal business hours. :)

Add some of the VHF/UHF "Dot" frequencies. It can be fun listening to and trying to identify the users.

It is, isn't it? How do YOU identify users?

Not as much fun right now but during the winter months having PSE freqs plugged in can be fun... nice to know exactly when you're power is coming back online. :)

The hobby of monitoring radio frequencies using a scanner is a lot of fun! I find it amazing that there are people out there that find listening to McDonalds and Jack-in-the Box just as exiting as I do listening to Police and Fire Action.

"Keep on Scanning"
