 Post subject: Oakland PD Radio issues?

Typical news article about technology, large on hype, thin on real facts, curious how much of a problem actually exists...

I read another story that attributed the issues to an HVAC failure. Hardly a Harris issue.

I fault the people who oversaw the procurement and the people who are supposed to overseeing the operation.

Any site I build today would have lead/lag HVAC systems with high/low temp alarms with additional alarms on the units themselves.

Yep and it's hard to quantify or connect every little issue to a directly related radio problem. If the article is correct, and they've had issues (over time) where they've lost their radio service, then yes, it's a problem. However, I'm sure Harris is competent enough to figure out what's going on.

That being said, the ever-increasing technology that we use is getting more and more complex. Issues take time to resolve within complex systems, etc. Unlike the old days where it just "worked" or it didn't -- and you could just replace a part. A lot of people still don't understand this point.

Adequate planning and contingency-planning is the key to success or failure. Competent engineers help too. :)

And a lot of the time in the past we didn't even know it was broken for a while... Remote sites/voters/wire line control stations... They could go for days and weeks before someone noticed a problem. Now with everything being constantly monitored... everyone says it is breaking all the time.
