Bit it.
Uniden Bearcat 210 XLT.
It was on in the background for about 16 hours a day.
Now all it does is give an 'open' squelch' noise, unless there's a TX.
I can't find a reset.

Oh well. $35 from Ebay a year ago.
My ham gear does a better job.

But still. I'm back to no working scanner.
I may have to get another one.

Similar situation here -- my SportCat 200 that I've been using for almost 11 years suffered a fatal BNC connector failure and after taking it apart I'm not sure I have the soldering chops to replace it.

My only "scanners" now are my 2m mobile and my little Chinese HT, which honestly don't do too bad of a job as long as all you want to listen to is conventional analog voice. The little HT with the cheapo-san dual-band whip is picking up Bonner County fire/EMS 100 miles away sitting in the cupholder.

Personally, I'm waiting to see what the local agencies do with their proposed new radio systems before I decide what to buy next. I'd hate to buy one of those iPod or TomTom-looking things just because they're the "best available" at the time and then find out that I would have been fine with a machine that actually looks like a radio.

That's why I haven't bought a $500 scanner.
No telling what might change.
I'm using a FT-7900 as my base.
Have a spanking new FT-270 w/ Diamond 'Flex' antenna.
And the V-8000 in the truck, but I think the 7900 & the 8000 are going to get swapped.
The 8000 blocks the trailer brake control thing.
The 7900 came with the disconnect kit and factory full range VHF & UHF TX/RX.

bad squelch pot?

3$ fix, if it is...

Try putting a meter on the pot and see if the resistance changes as you move it.

Mine was a volume pot, probably due to dust buildup. I just worked the knob and it mostly went away. I used to see a spray for solving this but not sure what it's called

I'll try some of my GF's perfume. Smells like a men's room at a truck stop anyway.

I like having an inexpensive 'receiver only' that I can leave on and not 'burn up' my transceivers.
To clarify; "tone board" was the PL part before they were standard issue, correct?
Since I'm so rural, and it's for desktop, I don't have an issue with interference.

PM me $ info, if you want.
