A lively discussion taking place over here: http://news.slashdot.org/story/12/02/08 ... lice-radio about Pasadena PD going encrypted and it's impact on scanners, hams and crooks. I tend to side with the folks that think the benefits of security don't outweigh the loss of public oversight. Especially since MDTs and cellphones are already available for sensitive comms. my $.02 |

Well, its unfortunate that it needs to go to encryption because of criminals, but it happens. I rather see them having a 2nd dispatch channel that is secure for this purpose, but thats just me. |

SWAT obviously (yet sadly) should be encrypted as well. Hell, I wouldn't even care if they encrypted the car to car or talkaround freqs so the officers have a place to talk crap. Just my 2ยข |
