I am trying to repair a radio system for a local football team.

All the radios check out with Telex brand headsets to a 4 pin connector the the 4pin connector has a PPT button wye in with the radio side headset/mic cable.

PPT buttons work flawlessly on all but two that only work when you key up the radio and push the PPT button.

Any ideas?

Broke, 'un'-soldered, or otherwise disconnected wire between headset and plug.
My opinion without having the item in hand.
Are you saying there's a PTT in-line?

Correct. It is inserted in line.

I have checked the button and the other connections. It appears its shield in the molded Kenwood radio connector.

What's the Kenwood radio model? Is this a custom design wiring scheme or a stock setup from Telex for Kenwood radios?

Radios are TK 3101. The cable iss something that is made by CoachComm.

I have two new cable assemblies on order arriving in time for the game.

The part I dont understand is why when I key up the radio by using the button on the radio and push the button on the cable it will pass audio. But push only the button on the cable will not key up the radio.

I have moved it around to the other radios and other headsets and it is isolated to these two cable assemblies.

I woke up to my nice headset ripped apart by a teenager rocking out the prior night.
I broke open the in-line control to re-solder.
Success.

Suggestion:
Break open the inline PTT casing, check continuity, repair (re-solder) or
Replace.
