It has a front end sens issue with VHF UHF. 800 still ok, about .8Uv. I blew out the front end myself having the scanner antenna too close to another antenna. I sent it in to G&G in NY state who is considered the best as an independent shop. He had it for 3 months and spent a lot of time on it mainly trying to get the front panel off (lots of epoxy) where most of the front end parts are.

He replaced a few caps but it still has a VCO issue which is what he can't get to. He didn't charge me anything but suggested I send it in to RS repair which he thought may offer me a refurbished replacement. I'm wondering if I should bother. I've heard horror stories about their repair service. It's over 2 years old so no warranty. I did purchase a 396xt last year as a back-up. I could still use the 197 as a large 800 receiver since it is digital. Just wondering if anyone else has tried the RS service?

Yeah, even a refurbished one will still cost over $250 I see one of the scanner outlets says they will have the remote heads for the 396 back in stock next month.

Add adiscriminator tap and it's a dedicated receiver for Trunker.
