I'm wanting a VHF portable.
Need field programming capability.
Type accepted.
Anyone have experience w/ Moto's HT1250 or similar?

If you can find one the HT1550 has field programming capability. They were discontinued in 2009 so nothing new unless you get lucky.

To get field programming you need the appropriate battery. So My guess is that modification to make it work with any battery would be possible.

I know nothing about this ability on the 1250's...

Did you mean a JT1000?

Ham & USFS would be it's primary mission.

Kenwood 2180's and 2170's are both FPP with firmware updates.

Motorolas XTS 2500 and XTS 5000 are FPP with the correct flash...For the money and didn't care about P25, the Kenwoods would be a good choice.

Why not get three wouxon radios? Type accepted, and you would have two spares :D

Don't they need to do this now to be able to sell in the US?

There is supposed to be a sunshine date (I thought it already passed) on manufacturing within, or importing into the US, radios without a "Narrow Band" capability.

NOT that I am defending the Chinese...

Well, looking at the programming software and my radio (UVD2 model) it certainly claims to do narrow band.

Get Kenwood tk-2180, and get the Firmware up grade for Field programming use. Tk-2180s are very good radios, they do all new narrowband and have lots memory. Can't go wrong with with this radio.
