Was wondering if anyone has ever heard the SAME alert on thier scanner for our area? Do you have to be parked on the Weather frequencies for it to come across or if you have your local FIPS code programmed will it come on when activated with normal scanning. I'm referring to a Uniden BC 780XLT here.

The SAME alert is sent over the normal 162.xxx frequenies, so you will have to park your scanner on the frequency, basically turning it into a $30 weather radio.

I believe Will "near the river" Robnson has a radio parked on SAME--not sure how useful it is.

Some scanners you can set the weather as a priority freq and it will check for the 1050 tone... I know that my 163/164 and 700 will do it that way... also my bubble pack GMRS radios that I use work like that as well...

You can also put most scanners into a WX standby mode, where you are not listening to the WX freq but it will open the squelch when it hears a 1050 tone. The FIPS code is encoded into the 1050 tone, and if you have one of the the FIPS programmed it will open the squelch...

The best way to test what you are looking for is on WED at Noon... When the test the alert system...

I use a scanner I leave at home on WX stnadby when I am not using it, just in case... But I will admit I am using a $200 scanner in place of a $20 WX radio...

I've heard SAME come up in 2000 around Savannah.
Tornado warnings & electric storms.

it's never worked on my scanners. Don't know if it was a programming mistake. Worked flawlessly on my FT60. Heard it before the TV stations, although it wasn't SAME but 1050hz opening the sql.
