Not much of an electronics guy, but I'm looking to purchase a handheld radio. One that I can type in different VHF freqs, not just a 16 channel Marine radio. Looking for something small and inexpensive. Any suggestions?

It would mostly be a emergency radio to toss in the hunting pack. Able to transmit to VHF SAR freqs etc.

What does the rest of your SAR group use? That would be a good place to start.

I'm not in a SAR unit. But I want the ability to contact/communicate with them if it ever comes down to it. If the Military has tought me one thing, it's that not having comms can sometimes be downright scary and life threatening. 2-300 $'s is a small price to pay for the ability to communicate.

Is it legal to own a radio your not licensed to use? Just curious?

You should invest in a Spot http://www.findmespot.com/en/ or other satellite based communications. A VHF HT on the SAR channel would be no good until a rescue/search has been started. Your range would be very short and it would not be a way to contact help initially. If you get a good FRS/GMRS unit a lot of SAR groups do monitor them when active in case the lost/injured do have them. They are not expecting you to come up on their channel. You would not use a radio to contact police when you needed them would you? So why would you do that here when other means are available? Spots are cheap for what they will do and they will give the rescuers an exact location.

I can tell you that a Radio hobbyist several years ago got on our radio freq. and directed us in to a fire, we were appreciative and then had SCSO confiscated his radio.

That SPOT messenger looks like a great tool to have on hand. I will be investing in one of those.
