I'm looking for a cheap scanner that handles LTR.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic_Trunked_Radio

My local tribal PD just moved out of the 50s and their simplex no-tone VHF system to an LTR system to match their casinos. Great upgrade for them but I can't seem to find a cheap scanner (or even an old two-way) that will monitor them.

What would you guys suggest?

BTW: I'm talking about the Tulalip Tribes in WA. So far just a single trunking channel at 452.1000MHz. They were very nice and let me put up a D-Star repeater at their new site (K7TUL) see http://tribalhams.net

I'm not aware of any scanner that does LTR. You just program in the frequencies and sometimes get the control channel.... really annoying to monitor.

There are a few that do LTR.

Look for the Rad Shack units that boast "Triple Trunking"
I am guessing a quick google of Radio Shack + LTR should get you some model numbers.

Personally, I would look at what an Icom F4TR would cost on ebay.
Kind of a crappy radio for all around 2-way purposes, but a pretty darn good LTR receiver / scanner.

The Uniden 346 will do it, not sure what the street price is.

Don't I feel silly. I've owned one that would do it all this time and didn't realize it.

Programmed in a first attempt into my GRE500 and will see what I hear from DOT... sigh.

The Radio Shack PRO-164 does and is on sale now.

It is the upgraded PRO-97.

It is also computer programmable and can be rebanded.

Thanks N7QOR. It looks like the F4TR is in the sub $100 range on ebay. That's what I'll do.

Don't get the USB cable for the F4TR. It won't work. Nor will a USB to serial adapter.

The BC780XLT will do LTR, I see them on ebay, and on the used market for $100.00 +/- all the time.

Some cheap LTR LMR units would be the Kenwood TK840, TK353, TK880, TK380, and lots more from the other manufactures. If you do go with an Icom be sure it is not one with the add on LR board by Smartunk (UT-111), they have a very crappy user interface, plus the programming is painful compared to most others brands.

Taco is absolutely right!
You will need a real serial port or no dice.

I have a programming file built that has all 250 TG's enabled for scanning. I can e-mail, it will save you a ton of time.

N7QOR: That would be great! You can send it to nethead#gmail com.

I've got an old 486sx laptop that I use for batwing programming, I figure that will work. I'll need to dig up the Icom RSS.
