Personally, I prefer to remain "low key" and not let people know what I am listening to.
As such, I have never received that question.

I believe there should be some sort of professionalism involved when listening to a scanner in public, I mostly listen in the privacy of my home but when I do listen in public I try not to draw attention to myself.

There are people out there that purposely try to draw attention to themselves! I have seen them pretend to talk on their portable scanner and these are the same people that try to pretend that their auction bought Ford Crown Vic is a real Police Car. I will be at an emergency scene picking up and getting back in service and if you look around you can spot a lot of the what I call "Scanner Geeks" they come out of the wood work.

I remember the flood of about 1996 when there was a lot of radio traffic on the Centralia Police channel and one officer said "for all the folks in scannerland"...

Yup. I've gotten those same questions from my friends before. But like others I like to keep it low key when in public. Mostly because I don't want to be bothered with "Can I listen too?" and "Where can I go buy one of those scanners?".

There use to be this one guy in Snohomish Co that was always at our bigger incidents taking video / pictures. He always had a scanner on him no matter where he was. And I know he would sell the stuff to the media outlets and or pubic for cash. I was at a aircraft crash in Paine Field back in the 90's and he had video of it prior to us arriving. I later asked for a copy and he wanted (forget the exact number) a pretty large amount of cash for the video. Sadly I never got a copy.

Like FireDawg89, I've been at a scene where the scanner folks come out to watch and listen. Which for the most part does not end up being a problem.

When my girlfriend and I are out in public, people tend to stare, but frankly, I don't care. Then they look up and see the pagers and FD t-shirts and usually can put 2 and 2 together. Plus the tat helps identify.

We went to a store the other day (can't remember which one) and the girl behind the counter asked if we were undercover loss prevention officers. :bowrofl:
