I have some of those 2', 3' & 4' I tried years ago.
Like Chris said they work fairly well on VHF & UHF.
Well in VHF low. Also never tried on 800.

Did you double check that is was electrically OK? (If that is the one I gave you).

Worked fine the last few days. I have yet to really put it through it's paces though.

At the 2.5 year mark, I'm still happy with the Laird. I'm in the absolute bowels of the Port of Tacoma ATM, and was hearing chat on 163.7125. It sounded local and I took a closer listen. Turned out to be climbing rangers at MORA chatting....

In other news, my Comtelco is gone and a new one is in the mail. Someone in Portland has a nice antenna, which they probably used to stir their meth, leaving me with a bare NMO mount for the better part of last Thursday.
