Are these the same TRBO radios that won't work out of range of the repeater because the repeater has to handle the time division multiplexing?

No, your thinking of P25 Phase II which uses P25 Phase I for simplex use due to that issue.

MotoTRBO supports simplex.

Thanks KE7JFF. I'm not trying to start a war here, just trying to understand TRBO.

As I understand it, MotoTRBO radios work with two voice channels per time slot (TDMA). Without the repeater, the radio itself cannot sync the two voice channels to time slots. They will however transmit in 12.5 Khz analog mode but not in TRBO mode without the repeater? So, without the repeater, they can't operate in TRBO mode and are just as good as a regular NB analog radios?

MotoTRBO supports simplex.

HOWEVER, when TRBO goes simplex, it also goes 12.5 KHz wide.
Actually, it is always 12.5 KHz (or so) wide, but when running through a repeater, it allows 2 simultaneous conversations, equaling "1 talk path per" 6.25 KHz.

When the system goes away, the simplex occupies the full 12.5 as there is no ability to time slice it.

Keep in mind Nextel was an SMR radio for dispatch use, with interconnect also. It was the first large scale (nation wide) digital two way radio system. If nothing else they introduced a lot in B&I users to two way radio, and when the iDEN system goes dark, a lot of them will look for other dispatch solutions besides cell phones and this TRBO system, (as well as all of the other regional system) will fit a lot of those customer's needs. That is money in the pockets of a lot of local are shops.

I thought we liked two way radios(or is it just ones that we can monitor easy) I don't see what your issue with them is, but you use of "nexthell" is very childish and sounds like something one of the OWS hippies would spew. If you are blaming Nextel for the interference to 800MHz TRS blame the FCC who allowed a digital signals on adjacent channels.

I'm not sure what Tim's issue with Nexthell is, but I use that name for it proudly myself. I was one of their customers, both professionally and personally, for years, in locations all over the place.

The dropped calls, the busy bonks at critical times, the ludicrous coverage even in metro areas, the bulky, cumbersome handsets, the abusive customer service that changed to non-existent post-merger, the lack of seamless "roaming", the here-today-gone-tomorrow dead zones, and the tin-can voice call quality all contribute to their nickname, IMHO.

I don't have any particular issues with them. Just saw that spelling before, thought it was a clever play on words, and kept using it.

Back on track- we could always start an Intercept talkgroup on TRBOWest, each person paying Day for their own radio/s directly...Or am I a dork?

Linked to that video was this one...

Yea, until your repeater burns up then you're stuck with an analog 5 watt radio...good luck. :stupid:

I'll ask for a Demo in my area and see what they say.

I would be all for this. The NWSacn@Yahoogroups has two LTR talkgroups that a few of use in Salem, and PDX area.

I have some TRBO gear so the equipment outlay would not be so bad for me. I would also be glad to keep my eyes open for good deals on TRBO gear. That is assuming they will let you bring in your own radios.

For the hams in the group TRBO has a worldwide following. Check out the Motorola ARC TRBO page. http://www.dmr-marc.net/

Well I'd be up for it. The site says 2 talkgroups...One calling and one for extended chats? If we can get enough folks interested, this might be worth pursuing.

Well I would say "Geek" but this does sound interesting.... I guess it would all depend on the cost for me.
