I was only 5 years old and my Dad was stationed in West Germany at the time. I still remember the phone call that we got in the middle of the night from my Grandmother. My grandparents lived in Wapato and owned an apple orchard. I must have been sleeping in/around their bed that night because I remember the phone call and some light talking. My mother relayed the info to my Dad after the call. Later that morning, it was all over the local news. It was one of the very few mornings that I didn't watch Sesame Street.
I remember several years later watching their slides from that day. It was pitch black for several hours (days?) and ash was everywhere. They had collected several small vials of ash from that day. At some point, it looked like a typical snow day in the Yakima area -- but it was all ash.
