Any musings about what this will mean to those of us with BC780XT's and the like?

The article mentions "each radio will be given a unique identifier" or words to that effect....does this mean they are going to a trunked system?

I wonder what a narrowband broadcast will sound like on a old scanner. There have been several Cencom transmissions recently where the broadcast has been full-quieting and crystal clear, but the audio is really low. The field units didn't complain about low audio as they usually do. Since the reband will be half the "swing" of a normal FM transmission, would that result in a receivable, yet quieter audio?

Correct. To a "wideband" receiver, it would appear as low modulation, IE low volume.

Try listening to a transmission from a FRS handheld and you will notice the volume is somewhat lower compaired to most stuff on your scanner.

To be clear, rebanding is a separate thing and has nothing to do with narrowbanding.

Up until a month or two from now (when things actually get implemented and the dust settles) the quiet audio heard from some of the transmissions is due mainly to people speaking quietly into their microphones. Some of the transmissions have been really loud also... Those of us running 20+ year old technology will have to consider firing up the soldering iron and swapping out the (intermediate frequency) filters and possibly playing around with the component values associated with the FM detector IC to make life "happier" but more than likely will just run out and buy new "toys"... In the meantime as the spectrum gets filled up we will tolerate listening to three channels of "stuff" for every frequency we now have programmed. Or just use these "wheel chock" scanners (too small and lightweight these days to use them as "boatanchors" :oops: :roll: ) for monitoring Amateur Radio Service stuff..........................

DNR has been "narrowband" for awhile now... :mrgreen:

Yeah, Clackamas County has been narrowband down here since June and I have heard no complaints!

bumpity bump... I finally got around to rototilling the WWW and located sufficient programming data to get...... wait for it.......... a Bearcat 101 programmed for some Kitsap County stuff... Despite "narrowbanding" there's plenty of audio coming out of the speaker... Now to punch up a programming card for the SBE optiscan :bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl:
