Before GPS, how did simulcast sites keep time to stay in sync?

Also, our good friends, WWV, WWVH, WWVB and CHU as well as many other time standard stations...

WWV and WWVB are still my most commonly used methods of finding the correct time (as well as quite a few other things- HF propagation for one.)

High stability oscillators, a tuning tool and the ability to hear the other site as you tuned.

Having all the crystals made from the same stock at the same time helped with getting them to age together and usually drift the same direction.

Good stable power supply to the site.

Site delay- we used Allen Avionics delay boards.

Remember those old cat clocks with the waving tail and eyes that moved back and forth? Those were installed in mountain top sites and as the tail moved back and forth it would hit the side of the repeater cabinet and set the timing of the clock.
