So I've sold my 396T but it'll be a few weeks before I can purchase my 396XT. (I'm also holding out hope that GRE may announce a new radio to replace the PSR-500.)

So I dug out my RS Pro-90 trunktracker. I'm amazed this thing still works well but I think the Ni-Cd pack is probably old and needs replacing.

Question: I'm seeing (on several sites) that I can buy a Ni-Mh replacement pack. This new one ups the capacity to 2400mah versus 800mah! Am I going to have any problems with the built-in charging circuit? The battery is noted as a supported upgrade/replacement for this radio and others. So it should work okay right? This pack is one of those molded packs so you can't just buy AA batteries and charge them independently.

you would have to look at the original charging circuit but the answer - no problems that you care of, if the original only was putting out 800mh then your 2700 will max charge to around 800mh. If you have a charger that is capable of dealing with it just charge remotely. on the other hand it might not have a top off circuit so you can charge it all up!

I picked up on ebay this little smart charger for anything, its computer controlled and real slick. you put in the cells the Mh capacity and then it will do the rest.

but in the end its likely 12$ battery wouldn't worry much.

Hmm going point Spud, but I don't think the Pro-90 has this kind of limit circuit. The manual states that it takes 14-16 hours to even charge the included 800mah pack. So my guess is that it continuously trickle charges the battery pack.

I've ordered it - it was $30 - but if it gets me 2-3x the listening time then it'll be worth it.

BTW, I hate to admit this but the Pro-90 audio quality is better than the 396T - especially with stronger signals.

Charging is very critical on NiMh and NiCd charger should not be used as a substitute for a NiMH charger. They have a lot higher rate of self discharge, and you CAN NOT leave them on a charger all of the time. That will cook them, NiCd batteries are a lot more forgiving. If you use an extremal charger you should be OK, but I would not trust the one built in with out asking Uniden tech support first.

For more battery info that most care to see go to http://www.batteryuniversity.com

I received the Ni-Mh battery early this past week and it arrived with virtually no charge left. I charged it up and it's working great. It takes longer to charge but it has lasted almost a full 5 days on a single charge. (This is pretty much equivalent to my ex BCD396T.)
